Kiteboarding

The term kiteboarding is sometimes used interchangeably with kite surfing, but the phrase more accurately applies to a distinct offshoot of kite surfing that takes place on land. Most simply, kite boarding transports the conditions of using a kite and being propelled by the wind from water to land.

Kite boarders use a mountain board or landboard, which is basically a very large skateboard with foot-straps. The wheels are also larger than a typical skateboard, and are moved by air pressure. The kites are very similar to those used for kite surfing, and often the exact same kites are used.

Ideal conditions for kite boarding are spacious, empty areas where the wind is consistent and there are few obstacles such as trees or people. For the favorable wind conditions they offer, kite boarders will often make use of hard-packed beaches.

As with both kite surfing and skateboarding, expert riders are able to do tricks in the air such as grabs and flips. Advanced kite boarders are able to use to kite to fly several feet off the ground.
