Kitesurf FAQs

What is the difference between kite surfing, fly boarding and kite boarding?

This question is an understandable one because those terms are so often used interchangeably. The main difference is this: kite surfing takes place on water and is also called fly boarding. Kite boarding takes place on land, and the board has pneumatic wheels attached.

Is it possible to go upwind while kite surfing?

It is possible, yes, and seasoned riders are able to do so. However, beginners will almost certainly go downwind.

What is the wind window?

This phrase refers to the area in which a kite can fly. The best and most practical measurement is easy: it is basically the area you can see with your eyes (85 degrees to the left, 85 degrees to the right, 85 degrees upward).

How many kites do I need?

This depends on what you want to do and where you will be kite surfing. Technically, of course, you need only one kite. However, to be fully prepared, it is nice to have at least three kites: one for light, moderate and high winds. The higher the wind, the smaller the kite.
