Windsurfing Boards

Windsurfing boards have a sail attached which propels the rider through the water. The sail is used in the same way it would be on a boat, only it is easier to control. Essentially, the rider is carried upwind. Without wind, the boards don’t move much, but they can move in very light wind.

The rider has the option of a freeride board, a wave board, a racing board, a slalom board, a freestyle board and a beginner board. Beginner boards are very wide, with a high volume, which helps stability. Once riders get their bearing, usually the freeride board is used, though different disciplines of windsurfing require different boards.

Similarly, different windsurfing styles require different sails. For recreational windsurfers, the freeride sail is most common. This sail is comfortable to use. Racing sails are also available for those looking for speed and willing to sacrifice some maneuverability.
